Man jailed for defiling 11-year-old girl

Juaso (Ash), Oct 26, GNA - Abulai Ayoka, a farm labourer who could not control his sexual desire and took advantage of his employer's 11-year-old daughter to satisfy himself, has been handed an eight-year jail term in hard labour by the Juaso Circuit Court. Ayoka pleaded guilty to the offence.

Police Chief Inspector Kippo Iddrisu Mahama of the Juaso police, presenting the facts of the case told the court, presided over by Mr Jacob Boon that the accused was a farm labourer of the complainant who is the father of the victim.

He said on August 13, this year, the complainant sent Ayoka, victim and five others to his farm to harvest maize. The prosecution said while on the farm the accused lured the victim to a spot far from the others, pushed her down, covered her mouth to prevent her from shouting and forcibly had sex with her. Chief Inspector Mahama said after satisfying himself Ayoka cautioned the victim not to disclose her ordeal to a third party or risked dying.

Luck, however, eluded the accused two days later when the victim noticed blood in her urine and informed her mother who took her to a clinic at Breku near Asankare.

The victim mentioned Ayoka when a medical examination proved that she had been sexually abused. A report was therefore lodged at the Juaso police who effected the arrest of the accused. 26 Oct. 06

150 UCC Students Dismissed

A total of 151 students of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) have been dismissed for abysmal performance since the beginning of this year. They are made up of 128 level 100 students and 23 level 200 and 300 students.

The students failed in more than three-credit courses or failed to redeem themselves in supplementary examinations organised by the university to enable them continue their studies.

The Vice Chancellor of UCC, Prof Emmanuel Adow-Obeng, who made this known at a ceremony to matriculate 4,158 fresh students into the university at the weekend, said another 40 students who failed in three-credit courses were to be repeated to redeem themselves within one academic year which, failure to succeed would warrant outright dismissal.

He, therefore, advised fresh students to study diligently to ensure their continuous stay in the university, urging them to make good use of time on campus.

Rev. Adow-Obeng also advised the fresh students to adhere to school rules and regulations, warning that recalcitrant students who would breach university rules are likely to be either rusticated or dismissed outright.

On campus security, the Vice chancellor said a ¢400 million Police Post established on campus with funding from Ms Christine Churcher, Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape coast, had helped improve upon security there.

Mr Eric Sekyere, a 23 year-old second year student in Building Technology at the Sunyani Polytechnic died at the Regional Hospital on Saturday after sustaining injuries in a fire outbreak in his private hostel. Mr George Nunekpeku, President of the Students Representative Council of the Polytechnic told the Ghana News Agency the incident occurred at a private students' hostel at the Sunyani Magazine.

The SRC President said some of the students suspected that the deceased might have been asleep in the room when the fire broke out. He said others claimed that on seeing that his room was on fire, the deceased entered to pick his mobile phone and money, but slipped on his way out and a tent, which was in flames fell on him.

Mr Nunekpeku said the deceased's roommates were not present at the time of the incident but later rushed in to put off the fire and sent the deceased, who was then very weak to the hospital where he died a few days after admission.

He urged private hostel developers to liase with school authorities towards the development of a fallow piece of land near the Polytechnic to house students.

Mr Nunekpeku also appealed to the GETFund Board to release the GETFund hostel to the school authorities to manage. When the GNA contacted the Principal of the Polytechnic, Dr Kwasi Nsiah Gyabaah, he confirmed the incident but declined to comment further.
